Are You Making A New Year's Resolutions This Year?

Updated: Nov 4, 2020

Here we are again, the start of a new year. 2020 is different because we are at the start of a new decade. Can you believe 10 years have already gone by? This is the time of year for New Year's resolutions. Have you made yours?

Did you know that 1/2 of all resolutions are health related? Resolution makers vow to exercise more, lose weight and eat better? The problem is only about 8% achieve their goals. This means over 90% fail which leads to the question, why do they fail?

Some of the reasons why most people don't reach their New Year's resolution goals are:

  • You want it now! - Deciding to take control of your health is a great resolution to make in the new year. Keep in mind gaining those extra 45lbs didn't happen overnight so they won't disappear overnight either.

  • You don't believe you can really do it - If you have been making the same resolution to get in shape for the past few years and thus far have not been successful, you may not truly believe results will be different this time.

  • A little less conversation, a little more action - You find yourself talking about what you want to do but do not spend enough time actually doing something to reach your fitness goals.

  • You have no support to help you stay on track - Losing weight and getting healthier is no easy task especially if this has not been part of your lifestyle for a while.

Here are some things you can do to help this be the year you finally lose weight and get healthier.

  • Get down to the nitty-gritty and ask yourself why do you really want to make these changes?

  • Is your goal realistic and measurable?

  • Write out your plan. Do you have one?

  • Do you have someone to be a support person to help keep you on track?

  • What can you do to celebrate little victories along the way?

Asking these questions can help catapult you in the right direction for sticking to your New Year's resolutions for 2020. It is important to break your goals down into smaller steps so you will reach milestones on the way to your ultimate goal. Progress that you can actually measure and results you can see along the way are more likely to keep you on track for success!
